Hey busy mommas! Its another lovely Tuesday where I pop on the blog to tell you some savvy secrets for making your life easier, more stylish and a whole lot more fun!
So this week, it's all about how to discover your true style. There are a lot of ways to go about figuring out exactly what it is you are going for but I am a Pinterest gal ALL THE WAY! I like using Pinterest because it gives me a place to put all those influential images. Then when I am out looking for something new and amazing, I can pull up my style board on Pinterest and see if the item I am thinking about buying is truly right for the style direction I am looking to take my wardrobe.
Now let me say first, that style is something that changes. You won't always have the exact same taste as you grow and change with the times. So don't think this is something that can be fixed over night and done once and forgotten. Style is a habit! Just like your good eating habits, or exercise routine. It's not an overnight fix to lose 20 lbs and that 20 lbs won't stay off unless you get in the habit of working out and eating right. So the same thing applies to your wardrobe. If you don't maintain it, it will become a hot mess express! And then you have to go in and start the process all over.
Next week, I will be covering how to purge your closet like a style pro, so I thought it fitting to write about finding your style direction this week since, you really should have an idea of what you want in your "dream closet" before you start purging away all your clothes. You can't clean up a hot mess express, without a good solid plan and direction of what it is you want to achieve with that plan.
Ok, enough of the jibberish. I hope you get my emphasis on how important it is to know what style you actually want to have and how to make it all come together. So let's dive in...
First, make a board on Pinterest and name it- "Your Name Style Board" so mine is called "Shannon's Style Board". Really, you can name it whatever the heck you want but style board is simple and you know what it is for. See a sample of my style board below or visit it here.
If you follow this board on Pinterest, every time I pin something new to the board, it will show up in your feed so you can see what I'm pinning. Better yet, follow me entirely and see ALL of what I am pinning:) I love to pin so be prepared to be inspired! Follow me here.
Second, Search Pinterest!
Many don't know that you can search Pinterest like you do google. For reals! Is your mind blown? If you have ever been intimidated by Pinterest, I'm here to tell you that you are missing out! Maybe you are pretty "Pin savvy". If so, then my apologies for the "basic" duh moment here. But many of my clients say they are scared of Pinterest. It's like anything else, once you get used to how it works, its addicting!
So what to search you ask?
Think about your lifestyle needs. Brainstorm 5 words that describe your lifestyle needs. Then add the word outfits to the end of those terms. So if you work in an office, search the term "office outfits" or "office outfit ideas".
From there start pinning the looks that instantly make your heart skip a beat! Add at least 20 pins to your board by searching the 5 different lifestyle need terms you created.
Now for the fun part!
Analyze your style board. Find the common denominator of the looks you are pinning. So at the moment that I am writing this post, I am craving over-sized sweaters, distressed boyfriend jeans and killer ankle boots. So that's what I look for when I'm shopping because I don't have any of those items in my closet currently, with the exception of the ankle boots. But there again, I love ankle boots SO much, I will most likely have a few of my top favs in my dream closet.
Speaking of dream closet...that's another great way to search Pinterest. Use your favorite brands (even if you can't afford to shop them, hello Anthropologie!) And go to town! Then you can look for less expensive similar items when you are out browsing for new stuff (hello Layered By Cake, hehe). Here's a sampling of what I have pinned..
I hope that is making sense for you. If you have a hard time with your board, invite me to the board and I am happy to take a look and give you feedback on what I'm seeing. You are likely to pin some more "out of the box" styles for what you normally wear but use those to help you get out of your comfort zone. So if you start out pinning all striped tops and you have plenty of those in your closet, open your mind to other ideas or maybe other ways to style your favorite striped tees.
Remember style is fun, its personal and it should be ever evolving, just like you are! Don't discount a style because the model is uber thin or has longer hair than you or whatever excuse you make up in your head about why something won't work on you. Get creative and have fun!
